Converting a paper grade pulp mill to meet the needs of a market as demanding as the dissolving pulp market was no easy task. It required great commitment from everyone who works at Caima to face the challenges raised by a new and unfamiliar market.

In 2016, CELPA’s members had a turnover of 2,538,000 Euros. This cluster created 90 thousand direct, indirect and induced jobs. These numbers are testament to the sector’s strategic importance to the Portuguese economy and to the country as a whole.
The majority of paper pulp factories use the kraft or sulphate pulp process. There are few industrial units which use the magnesium bisulphite process to produce pulp. In Portugal only Caima uses this process.
Carlos Amaral Vieira, general director of CELPA, explains that the paper industry is founded on circular economic business model (reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling of materials and energy).
In the first three months of the current year, Altri sold around 274.3 thousand tonnes, representing an increase of 8.2% on the same period in 2016.

During the first three months of the year, the demand for hardwood pulps reached 8.2 million tonnes, up 7.5 percentage points year-on-year. The type of hardwood pulp produced using eucalyptus saw demand increase by 7.6% from January to March of this year.
