Portugal has had a new ambassador in China since January of this year. José Augusto Duarte, a recent arrival in Beijing, makes no bones about how strategically important China is to Portugal, and praises the excellent state of Portuguese / Chinese relations.
The diplomat feels that if a good political understanding is the backbone of the relationship between the two countries, then it is their economic relations which provide the robustness required to support this relationship.
In terms of commerce, Duarte believes that Portugal is capable of doing more trade with China. He is well aware of the concerns over and interest in domestic exports to China, and he paid a visit to Caima as one of the companies of merit which export innovation and added value to that part of Asia.
