Ivone Neves, the head of Viveiros do Furadouro, says that it was inspirational to share the vision. \u201cIf the Dutch can so efficiently produce ornamental and horticultural plants in technologically advanced greenhouses, then why can\u2019t we in Portugal produce forest plants using the same methods?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was the springboard for a project which at the start was viewed with suspicion and met with raised eyebrows, but which also inspired lots of ambition and enthusiasm. People believed in this project because it was motivational and different, and in September 1991, the earthworks went ahead. Plant production began April 1992, in the glass greenhouse designed to produce eucalyptus trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an innovative project and it is still fully \u2028operational even almost a quarter of a century on, and is considered a reference in the field of forest plant production\u201d, says Ivone Neves.<\/p>\n<p>She goes on to say that at first every day was difficult. \u201cWe were always being unpleasantly surprised. This project, this nursery, this figure of over 120 million good forest plants we have produced since 1992, is the result of lots of hard work by a cohesive group of fantastic people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director underlines the role played by each employee and compares it with a puzzle. Each employee is a piece which fits perfectly in its place. It just takes one piece to go missing and the whole picture is incomplete. Whichever piece it is. She says, \u201cWe believe in the wise idea that happy employees create happy customers. And that\u2019s why I want to thank everyone who works hard every day to help us meet this challenge\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While the employees are a fundamental piece, the customers are the proof of the recognition and success of the nurseries. \u201cOur customers have stayed with us year after year, they believe in what we do and they tell others about the qua-\u2028lity of our plants. Em Abril de 1992, come\u00e7ou a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de plantas na estufa de vidro idealizada para produzir eucaliptos.\n\n\u201cFoi um projecto inovador que continua a funcionar em pleno, apesar de j\u00e1 ter passado um quarto de s\u00e9culo, sendo considerado uma refer\u00eancia na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de plantas florestais\u201d, diz Ivone Neves.\n\nA gestora refere que nos primeiros tempos todos os dias eram dif\u00edceis. \u201cOs sustos eram uma constante. Tudo parecia demasiadamente complexo e dif\u00edcil de levar a bom termo.\u201d Como em qualquer projecto que se inicia houve erros e viveram-se desilus\u00f5es. As geadas, os insucessos das produ\u00e7\u00f5es, a gest\u00e3o do pessoal, as encomendas n\u00e3o levantadas, as plantas deitadas ao lixo. Apesar dos obst\u00e1culos, tentou-se n\u00e3o perder o rumo e perseguir com resili\u00eancia a miss\u00e3o que \u00e9 clara e simples, produzir as melhores plantas, contribuindo para que sejam plantadas no s\u00edtio mais adequado e na melhor altura.\n\nApesar de a miss\u00e3o ser simples, nem sempre \u00e9 f\u00e1cil de atingir.
