Exactly one year ago today, as I write. For the first time in the democratic era, it was expected that the public accounts would be in the black. 2020 threatened to be a hard year, with forecasts pointing towards a slowing down of the world economy. Companies were preparing their budgets and plans of action taking this into consideration, as well as other background trends and turmoil (geopolitical volatility, climate change, social tension, digitalisation, etc) which were looming and unfolding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussions were had in Portugal about whether a 2% growth was erring too much on the side of caution. Just a few short months later, we are now wondering whether expecting an 8% fall is too optimistic! All the more startling, since 8% is the average figure: in many sectors of business, the tumble will be even more drastic. The paper pulp sectors are no exception, and there are have been marked differences between the different areas of speciality. The sharp decline of prices had a further strong impact on sales figures. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody could have been adequately prepared for this crisis, particularly in this world that is so interdependent. Fortunately, governments appear to have learnt from past mistakes, even those committed almost 100 years ago: following on from World War I, the mood shifted towards closure and protectionism, generating political tensions which culminated in World War II and a slowing down of growth which lasted for over three decades. Altri is itself an example of the advantages of globalism: we buy part of our raw materials abroad and export the vast majority of our output. In such an economy, it\u2019s not just merchandise which moves from country to country. People also travel the world, not only for tourism but also for professional and commercial purposes. Jos\u00e9 Pina, the new chairman of Altri\u2019s executive committee, is one of those people, having worked at major locations such as the USA and China. Welcoming such knowledgeable and experienced professionals into our fold, to add to our existing skills and know-how, has the potential to further strengthen Altri\u2019s competitive edge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the going gets tough, the tough get going\u201d. Times are tough, but so too is the Altri community. &nbsp; Resilient, as we now say. Now more than ever the word \u201ccompany\u201d makes sense when describing a business enterprise. We can find our way out of this crisis more easily when each of us plays our part as a company, as a citizen and as a professional, setting an example, all of us together. In company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time rolls on. Better times will come. Right now, we are laying the foundation for those better times. Within Altri, we are reaching unprecedented levels of efficiency. Na data em que escrevo, h\u00e1 exatamente um ano. Pela primeira vez em democracia, antecipava-se que as contas p\u00fablicas fechariam com um saldo positivo. 2020 anunciava-se como um ano dif\u00edcil, com as previs\u00f5es a apontar para uma desacelera\u00e7\u00e3o da economia mundial. As empresas preparavam os seus or\u00e7amentos e planos de atividade tendo isso em considera\u00e7\u00e3o, assim como outras tend\u00eancias e turbul\u00eancias de fundo (reequil\u00edbrios geopol\u00edticos, altera\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas, tens\u00f5es sociais, digitaliza\u00e7\u00e3o, etc) que se vinham afirmando e anunciando.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Em Portugal discutia-se se 2% de crescimento n\u00e3o seria pouco ambicioso. Em poucos meses, debate-se se um decr\u00e9scimo de 8% n\u00e3o \u00e9 otimista! Uma expressiva dimens\u00e3o da mudan\u00e7a, sendo que os 8% s\u00e3o uma m\u00e9dia: para muitas atividades, a queda ser\u00e1 muito maior. Os setores da pasta e papel n\u00e3o fugiram \u00e0 regra, tamb\u00e9m, neste caso, com diferen\u00e7as entre as diferentes especialidades e, sobretudo, com uma descida acentuada dos pre\u00e7os a influenciar decisivamente o valor das vendas.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Esta \u00e9 uma crise para a qual nunca se poderia estar adequadamente preparado, nomeadamente num mundo muito interdependente. Felizmente, os governos parecem ter aprendido com erros anteriores, mesmo que cometidos h\u00e1 quase 100 anos: na sequ\u00eancia da 1\u00aa Guerra Mundial, enveredou-se por uma l\u00f3gica de fechamento e protecionismo, geradora de tens\u00f5es pol\u00edticas que redundaram numa segunda guerra mundial e uma desacelera\u00e7\u00e3o de crescimento que durou mais de 30 anos. A Altri \u00e9, ela pr\u00f3pria, um exemplo das vantagens desse mundo globalizado, como hoje se diz: compra parte da sua mat\u00e9ria-prima no estrangeiro e exporta a larga maioria da sua produ\u00e7\u00e3o. Numa economia com esta natureza, tamb\u00e9m as pessoas circulam, n\u00e3o apenas com prop\u00f3sitos tur\u00edsticos, mas tamb\u00e9m comerciais e profissionais. Jos\u00e9 Pina, o novo presidente da comiss\u00e3o executiva da Altri, \u00e9 um desses exemplos, tendo trabalhado em geografias t\u00e3o importantes como os EUA ou a China.
